The potato harvest

A bucket full of treasure! The main crop potato harvest. Thanks to Hub for the digging and helping to cover the ground.

The harvest was smaller than I had anticipated although they were in a little late and had to fend for themselves during the hot weather in May and June. Still I think the red ones were the biggest success. Will have to dig out the name of the variety and update later ready for next year.

The great cover up

All ground has been covered ready for me to sow the green manure, I have forage pea and forage rye to sow, seeds now on kitchen worktop to remind me to take them next time.

Used my new pins to hold down the weed covering, bought from BHGS the other week, easier and neater than the water filled plastic bottles I usually use. They were impressive so may have to invest in some more.

Let's dig up the tatties

Digging up potatoes and the soil left behind is lovely. Forgot to bring green manure seeds so will cover ground and bring them next time. Should do well, this is the best soil I have seen on the allotment so far. All the digging has paid off!

Winter squash are in!

The winter squash are in, some are not looking great but they have two chances. Feebs your windowsill is clear again and thanks Hub for digging the holes to plant them in. Loving the circle idea to make it a bit different.

Spinach beet also planted, plenty more at home to plant so will see how this does, good roots on the plants despite constant slug nibbling in the greenhouse at home.

It's raining

Blimey its been pouring down today although pleased to report no flash floods round here like in Dorset.

Hopefully this means digging will be possible tomorrow evening before the next batch of rain on Saturday.

Raspberry harvest

Yay picked loads of scrumptious raspberries. They were supposed to be firmly in the raspberry area but the ground was too hard in May to transplant, so they are on the fringe of the plot but I am claiming the fruit as it's my land!

Lovely raspberries...

The mini orchard

Pondering what to do about the area beneath the trees in the mini orchard. Shall I sow some grass? Shall I cover with the black stuff to keep the weeds down? Or can I think of anything else?

The latest allotment view

A view across the allotment, both ways. Starting to look a little more loved but still short on plants and too many weeds abound.

Pathway sorted

Bit more tidying up this evening. Pretty windy up there but looking better each time.

Clear definition between me and my neighbours now.

A surprise harvest

Discovered whilst clearing the bed - forgot about these under the weeds - nice surprise!

Japanese onions and garlic

More clearance - looking good

Path cleared on the right hand side

Ready for the winter squash / sweetcorn and jersey pots looking good

Making way for the winter squash

Before clearance - look at the far right of the picture - thats the one for today

and after
Straight from work this evening and a productive 45mins clearing an area ready for the winter squash.

They really need to go in and are looking sad, plus Feebs is still not happy that they are in her windowsill.

Still rain expected Sunday so fingers crossed they can go in then.

Sheds still standing

Pleased to report that so far the shed is still standing. Glad of somewhere to perch in the shade this evening.

Thanks hub x

Getting there

Pictures at the end of an hour and a half of clearing weeds in the humidity. Paths cleared along by the vege beds, potato area and chopped some in the potential winter squash bed.

Big wild flowers chopped down but the wild flower meadow I have left for now.

Overall looking better than when I got there, hopefully looking a little more loved now.

Another potato piccie

Looking good and the plot next door is taken now so I have gained a bit of land from the pathways being remarked and have cleared it so I am not put to shame.

Return of the potatoes

So that's what an hour of hoeing can do. Potatoes are visible again but not looking great. Hopefully with a bit of rain I can dig them up and see what we have got.

Where are the potatoes?

Weeds have overtaken again. The plots have also been remarked so I have gained even more.

I have a follower!

Big shout out to Vicky S for being my first follower.

Thanks Vicky, catch you soon, enjoy the allotment antics.

How hot is it!

Blimey it's been too warm to make the trip to the allotment, which is generally in full sun. It's been 30c this week but the promise of heavy rain tomorrow means I would like to clear a few more weeds so that I might be able to dig and plant the winter squash.

Think I will brave it now for an hour, I can always sit in the shed and watch the world go by if hoeing becomes too exhausting.
